5/30/08 - REMINDER
EIN alone does not meet the requirement for phase I of your non profit/tax exempt for CCASA. Below is some of the information cover at the annual meeting by the EA we had speak to the group. There are many advantages.
"Nonprofit" is a state-level term and each state has its own qualification rules. The state determination has no bearing on whether the organization qualifies for exemption from federal income taxes.
If the organization qualifies for tax exempt status under federal rules, it has two major advantages:
1) It is exempt from paying federal income taxes
2) Donors may deduct contributions made to the organization.
If the organization just applies for non profit status only, they are subject to income taxes. The first process in applying for a tax exempt status is to file their Articles of Incorporation with the secretary of State. After you receive this you can then apply for tax exempt status from the federal. You then will apply for tax exempt status from the state. Just filing with the Federal does not automatically make you tax exempt for state purpose. If you don't apply for the state also, you will be subject to income taxes at the State level.
If you are in jeopardy of losing your tax exempt status from the state you will also be in jeopardy of losing your tax exempt status at the federal level. Both entities do talk to each other.
Unfortunately, people don't seem to understand the difference between nonprofit and nonprofit tax exempt organization. If they want to try to get contributions from people and businesses they need to be tax exempt. Otherwise, any money they receive; the people contributing cannot write this off as a donation and the team accepting this contribution is subject to income taxes.
This was one of many new requirement for team registration this year. With the metro coming on us in a few weeks we need to get the insurance cards out to the players. It has been decided to process the teams that have competed the first three items listed under "TEAM". They will be placed on probation to have all the other steps completed by 5:00 pm Friday June 13th. HOWEVER, This is not something you want to wait until June 13th and find out your team has not meet all their requirement!!!!
Hope this helps

11/3/07 - IMPORTANT NEW REQUIREMENTS! To protect our members, CCASA and ASA, the following requirements to register an "A" Travel Team in Central California will take effect immediately:
- “A” travel teams/organizations must not be affiliated with a recreational league. This means that an “A” team/organization must have a Board of Directors separate from a recreational league and that no individual may serve concurrently as a member of the Board of both an “A” team/organization and a recreational league.
- No person can coach an "A" team and be a member of a Board of any recreational league.
- All “A” travel teams/organizations must submit a set of approved By Laws to CCASA
- “A” travel teams/organizations shall be registered, or have applied for registration, as a non-profit organization. One of the implications of such registration is that parent coach travel expenses may not be paid from the team’s bank account.
- Each “A” travel team/organization must prepare a proposed budget for its annual operations, income and expenses as well as a statement on how players fees are set prior to the selection of players for a championship season. Each “A” travel team/organization must provide an end-of-the-year income and expense statement. These documents must be submitted to the Association J.O. Commissioner and given to all prospective players and their parents/guardians.
- All coaches will be required to register using the same method as players.
- All coaches will undergo background checks during the registration process.
Questions should be directed to either Dave Forte or Jeff Dean.
9/30/07 - New
requirements are on the way for forming "A" Travel Teams in 2008.
These new requirements will be finalized at the general membership
meeting on October 13 and 14 in Lemoore. Stay tuned for the info.
8/7/07 - On
8/1/07 I assumed the J.O. Commissioner position held by Tom Dowd.
Tom will be the new Executive Assistant to the Commissioner. Jeff
Dean has taken my position as the GFP-A Director of "A" Travel.
Please give Jeff your support while he learns the new duties.
I will assist Jeff with whatever he needs and we will make this
a smooth transition. |
