CIF rules and 'A' Travel Teams
I've been getting some
calls regarding CIF rules as it pertains to players practicing
or playing with their travel teams. I did some research and found
that specific section of the CIF bylaws. No where does it pertain
to or restrict any practice, only competition. Should a high school
coach not allow a player to practice with her travel team, I would
suggest that you inform them of Article 6 of the CIF bylaws. If
this doesn't resolve the problem, I suggest you take it to the
school's Athletic Director then to CIF itself.
Some high school coaches
are going as far as telling players they will sit the bench or
may even be cut for practicing with their travel team. This
is against CIF rules. Inform your players in this situation
to have the coach direct those comments to their parents and then
take it up with the school's Athletic Director then with CIF.
Here is CIF's Rule
Interpreter for softball: Vince Rosse' (909) 684-2632
Article 6 states:
600.
COMPETITION ON AN OUTSIDE TEAM
A student on a high
school team becomes ineligible if the student competes in a
contest on an "outside" team, in the same sport,
during the student's high school season of sport. If the outside
team has half or more of the team members as stated in the National
Federation rule book for that sport, it shall be considered the
same sport. Examples: three on three basketball -- outside team
competition prohibited; two on two volleyball -- outside team
competition permitted. For purposes of this rule, touch football
and flag football are considered to be a different sport than
tackle football. In the sport of soccer only, it is permissible
for a student on a high school team to compete in a contest on
an "outside" soccer team except during the period of
November 15 through March 15. During the period of November 15
through March 15, a student on a high school soccer team becomes
ineligible if the student competes in a contest on an "outside
" soccer team during the student's high school season for
soccer. This rule shall not be in effect for those sports conducted
outside the state adopted season of sport.
